Banner Image/Car Info Car: Lancia Martini 037 Original Group B Rally Car Photographer: Source/Article/Info. Anyone that drives up beside you with another Civic and calls you a poser is not going to be going anywhere nice in life. Moreover, if you're not driving like a dick or trying to pick up teenagers in parking lots, a spoiler will be just fine. If you like the look, go for it. If it's possible for you to be getting a nicer car in the future, consider saving for that. But don't let the fear of not looking good to other people (strangers, especially) stop you from doing something you want to do. Don't get me wrong, I owned one and I loved the hell out of that thing, but a spoiler is the last thing that car needs: a-extra weight- the only reason why a civic is as quick as it is, is due to its power-weight ratio, adding this kind of unnecessary weight hinders that.
B- waste of money- save it up for something actually worth buying. Don't go ricing out the civic, just enjoy it for what it is like herrtichy suggested. C- It's a FWD vehicle. Do you really want to put more down-force on the tail of your vehicle thereby taking pressure off of your driving wheels? Seems pretty silly to me.

Although, in all reality, aero packages really don't have much of an effect under 60 mph, and its not until 75+ that it's actually doing something significant. I understand it can help glue the rear down and preventing tail-whipping, but what roads are you traveling where this is actually necessary?? D- aesthetics- can't help you in this department. If you think it brings character or some flavor to your car, that's all in the eye of the beholder. I'm just here for the pure functionality argument.
All in all, just love your civic the way it is, treat it well, and it'll love you for life, even all the abuse you give it. I still miss my first one that I railed up to 180k within 6 years and it still ran like a champ mind you, since it was my first car, I drove the shit out of it, dropping the clutch left and right and pushing it waaaaay harder than one should. But, the funny thing is, it kept coming back, and never had any major issues. When they race these FWD cars professionally they do in fact have spoilers. The small stock spoiler on a civic IS functional.
It will not 'take pressure off of your driving wheels?' Yes its obviously not going to help but at higher speeds but that's sorta the point. Some downforce on the back of a FWD will keep the rear wheels planted. Bottom line is its aesthetics, if the car isn't modified you wont notice any performance gains but its not going to hurt it either. Its your car, if you like it rock it. Anyone who tells you 'buy a real sports car' or 'the 8 lbs spoiler will ruin power to weight' Doesn't know what they are talking about. Plenty of them are fast in stock form or 'riced' out just like plenty of them are total crap boxes riced or stock.
As far as looks go i think we can all agree the biggest sin is clear taillights, giant metal spoilers and Type R stickers. But 8lbs does make a difference. In the grand scheme of racing, its all the little items that make up the weight of a car, and you start finding out that there's a lot of fat that can be trimmed. Generally speaking, every rotating lb is the equivalent of 10 static lbs. So, in the hypothetical situation that you can somehow lighten up your wheels but have to go with heavier springs in which makes the car net-weight more, you might actually perform better with a lighter rotational inertia. Regardless, almost no single component weighs effectively that much, and once you start adding little things here or there, you will be slowing down the car.
And 8lbs is quite a bit in the grand scheme of things when you're running only 100hp. Ever drive with just a single added passenger and notice how badly it chugs in comparison?
Well, that spoiler is weighing you down that 1/20th. Or, perhaps, if you eat less for a week, you might make up for it:D I'm just saying that this car isn't meant to be a race car. That spoiler provides no functional purpose on the real road. The aerodynamics that the spoiler provides only comes into effect at higher speeds and almost nowhere can one open up in a car like that to actually take advantage except for on the track. Its a waste of money in that department. Additionally a tail lip would weigh less and do you much better.
WITH that being said. Aesthetically, it does look nice and much better than any other spoiler you can get on the market. If its for the looks and you think it gives your car character, hell yea put it on. Make your car your own. But if you're going-on saying that this is some sort of a beneficial performance mod, gtfo here. I think we are very much over thinking this.
8 lbs is not an issue what so ever at 117 hp stock civic that someone plans to daily drive and not build a race car out of. A 200 lbs civic or even a stock one that he plans to race in a particular class, maybe but a Bone stock civic destined for drive through and parking lots.come on.
If you are worried about 8 lbs then why have a heater or AC considering they can weigh up to 50 lbs combined. We are splitting hairs here. The spoiler doesn't rotate either so comparing it to rotating mass is confusing. One has nothing to do with the other, and 8 lbs past the rear axle on a FWD with 100 hp isn't close to 'rotating lbs'. Not trying to be an asshat, just don't know where you are going with that. My only point was on a stock civic the spoiler is aesthetics, weight and function (although the spoiler does have a function) are moot points at stock power levels.
As far as the race car argument, i think you have to build a race car one and clearly hes taking about a stock car. Any car can be a race car but its not what hes doing so it doesn't really matter.
